weary, stressed, burdened

What Jesus Meant by Rest in Matthew 11:28–30

by Joeina Waldenga | 4 min read

Jesus promised rest for the weary, but many Christians still feel exhausted. Discover what Matthew 11:28-30 teaches about true spiritual rest and how to truly rest in him.

Why are we so busy?

Earlier this year we were chatting with a friend about our schedule and life, and he stopped us and said “Oh my gosh, when do you rest?”. Why am I always busy?
It was something we had started to feel, though maybe we hadn’t asked the question out right. We felt like we were holding everything together but just barely. One of us would take two kids and run to soccer while the other one was at home trying to catch up on dishes and laundry with the other child. Our lives felt like we were the ball in the pinball machine; tossed all over the game just trying to get to the end. We kept saying to each other “this season is just busy” and “just a few more weeks and it’ll slow down”.

But when were we resting during that season? We weren’t. And though I would like to blame the season, everything on our plate during that season we put there. We were weary and we were burdened- but we were also saying “Yes! Add it to the plate”.

Jesus Promises Rest for the Weary (Matthew 11:28–30)

Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light. Matthew 11:28-30

Jesus is promising us an easy yoke and light burden, but if you ask many of the believers around you, they will say life is hard, and busy. He promises rest when we come to him, yet we often find ourselves saying “when can I get time to rest?”. We can be assured that Jesus wasn’t lying; so where is the disconnect coming from?

Please don’t hear me saying that Jesus is promising that life will be easy. Or free of struggle. There will still be seasons where physical rest is hard to come by (those of you with newborns know this well), but Jesus is promising us rest in him in the spiritual sense.

Let’s dissect this verse together. Starting with the main clause of the first sentence: “Come to me and I will give you rest”. This is a promise. There is only one thing Jesus requires of you: come to him. Words matter, so let’s look at the original words. The greek here is only translated as “Come” or as “Follow” and either of those translations tell us the main desire: be with me. When we do that, Jesus promises to give us rest. The rest here has this idea of recovery to it, a place where you can collect your strength.

Even in my least busy season, when we’ve scheduled rest, I can tell you that it didn’t feel like I was recovering or being strengthen. I was pausing the striving at best. I was avoiding the inner strife by keeping busy, and when given a chance to soul rest, I avoided that by being busy in my rest. Scrolling, puttering around the house, filling the day with TV, books; anything except resting with God. I was seeking what the world may deem restful, but not seeking Jesus. Do you relate?

What Does Jesus Mean by His Yoke?

Let’s start with the first half of verse 29: “Take my yoke upon you”.

Yokes are the wooden bar placed across shoulders to carry a burden, or to bind two oxen together for labor. Jesus is giving us an opportunity to take the burden we are already carrying in this world, and exchange it for his burden. Once we’ve exchanged our worldly burdens for his light burdens, there will be rest for our souls. I picture us with a single yoke over our shoulders, a heavy bucket on both arms of the yoke, digging into our neck as we try to walk our busy lives. Jesus is offering a shared double yoke- this is one yoke that goes over your shoulders and his. The yoke, when done like this with oxen, teaches the younger oxen trust and will allow it to be trained by the older oxen. Jesus is telling us to trust him with the load, and offering to teach us his way.

When I come out of times of rest feeling more anxious, more tired, behind on everything, I have kept the world’s yoke on my back. I have told Jesus that I have this one, and very honestly, I have refused his yoke.

Building a Rhythm of Rest with God

How do we let go of our heavy burdens and accept his yoke? Come to him. If you have to spend time beforehand in preparation, do it. Make a list of the things you are feeling burdened by and bring them to God in prayer. Turn on worship music and get lost in it. Go outside and walk through his creation and praise him. Take the time to recover from the world’s striving and just come before him. Coming to Jesus isn’t another spiritual task to complete. It’s intentionally placing yourself before Him and surrendering your burdens to him.

Maybe your life really is in a busy season. But before you blame the season, ask yourself an honest question: What have I chosen to carry that Jesus never asked me to? We often pray for God to remove our burdens while clinging tightly to the ones we’ve picked up ourselves. This week, don’t simply schedule more rest—choose to exchange your yoke. Lay down what is weighing you down, come to Jesus, and trust Him enough to carry what only He was meant to carry. His invitation isn’t just for someday when life slows down. It’s for today. Come to him, and receive his rest.
